Multi-Use Radio Service (MURS)

Overview

MURS is a two-way radio service consisting of five channels in the VHF spectrum. MURS can be used for both personal and business communications and does not require a license.

Channels and Frequencies

  • Channel 1: 151.820 MHz
  • Channel 2: 151.880 MHz
  • Channel 3: 151.940 MHz
  • Channel 4: 154.570 MHz
  • Channel 5: 154.600 MHz

Usage and Regulations

MURS radios are limited to 2 watts of transmit power, and antennas must be no more than 60 feet above the ground or 20 feet above the structure on which they are mounted. There are no age restrictions for operating a MURS device.

Advantages of MURS

  • No license required
  • Good range, especially outdoors
  • Less crowded than FRS and GMRS channels
  • Variety of available equipment

Disadvantages of MURS

  • Limited to 2 watts of power
  • Channels shared with other users
